Coventor Inc.

coventor_logoCoventor® is the leading supplier of software tools and technology used in design of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and the modeling of Semiconductor and MEMS manufacturing processes. In the MEMS industry, 11 of the top 15 suppliers use Coventor’s tools, and its solutions are helping fuel robust growth in the MEMS industry. Its customers includes developers of MEMS-based products for automotive, aerospace, industrial, defense, and consumer electronics applications, including smartphones, tablets, and gaming systems. Coventor’s‘virtual fabrication’ solutions are used by the top IDM’s and foundries to accurately model their next-generation processes and advanced manufacturing technologies for both MEMS and traditional ICs.

The company was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina. It has development and sales offices in Cambridge, Mass (due to its roots at MIT); Silicon Valley, California; Paris, France and Tokyo, Japan.

Coventor’s software tools and expertise enable its customers to simulate and optimize MEMS device designs and fabrication processes before committing to time-consuming and costly build-and-test cycles. Coventor offers its technology in two main product lines. One is focused on the design and simulation of MEMS and MEM+IC devices, with its CoventorWare and MEMS+ product being the flagship solutions in this area. The second product line is centered on its SEMulator 3D solution, which is used widely by developers and users of next generation IC and MEMS process and manufacturing technologies.

All of Coventor’s software suites allow engineers to efficiently simulate and analyze designs before they are committed to manufacturing, saving time, money and development resources.

For MEMS design, its sophisticated 3D design tools support a wide range of the physics required in advanced MEMS, including the mechanical, electrical, piezoelectrical, optical, fluidic and electromagnetic domains, as well as package analysis. The company has built on this foundation of MEMS physics expertise to expand its product line to include solutions that allow the electronic circuitry and ICs that accompany MEMS in packaged MEMS-based products to be designed together. This requires integration with non-MEMS design methodologies and tools, i.e. EDA and System tools used by IC and electronics system designers.

For semiconductor process development, its SEMulator 3D products enable ‘virtual fabrication’ of processes to give designers increased insight, flexibility and efficiency before committing to silicon. Based on highly efficient voxel modeling technology, SEMulator3D has the unique ability to emulate complete process flows. Process engineers can detect process flow problems and device design errors before fabricating real devices to avoid the time, cost, and frustration associated with unnecessary build-and-test cycles.
